Arising like magic from the sagebrush, tho town of Downey, which two years ago consisted con-sisted of a few unpretentious store buildlngss and a collection of frame shacks, Is rapidly taking on the appearance ap-pearance of a modern little city This chauged condition Is due to the enormous enor-mous influx of settlors who have taken tak-en up land under tho Portneuf-Mar3h valley irrigation project, by which water wa-ter was furnished to the land for the first time during the past spring. During the last four months four modern brick business blocks have been erected by Utah concerns to bo used as distributing pointB for their productB for southeastern Idaho terrl-lorv, terrl-lorv, whilo numerous other brick blocks and residences have been erected. With tho Increased irrigated acreage acre-age to supplement the amount of dry farm lands under cultivation and the I ideal conditions which havo caused all crops to grow rapidly, an unprecedented unprecedent-ed harvest Is looked for this season. Wheat alone will average tlfty bushels to the ncre, from all Indications, according ac-cording to experienced farmers. |
