"No person shall, in any rpoiu or building occupied In the dlschnrge Of official duties by any ofllcor or employe of tho United States solicit In any manner whatever or receive any contribution of money or any other thing of value for any political purpose pur-pose whatever." Part of act of congress, con-gress, adopted January 16, 1SS3. Information as to a violation of the above rulo has been filed with tho department of justice in Washington. Tho violation Is charged to Henry Lincoln Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., reg- lster of deeds at the national capital, j an appolnteo of "President Taft, and one of the four Taft delegates at large from Georgia to tho Republican jiru&iuuiiutu cuuvuiiuuu in umcagu next June. Conviction for violation of this act entails a fine or Imprisonment, or both, In tho discretion of tho judge. During a recent visit of Johnson to Atlanta, -when he went to swing the Georgia delegation Into tho Taft column, col-umn, he entered the postmaster's office of-fice and called upon Postmaster "Mc-Koe "Mc-Koe for a contribution to the campaign cam-paign fund. When Johnson entered the office, Capt. George S. Donnell. secretary to the civil service commission commis-sion for the fifth district, was there, but it appears that he was not seen by Postmaster McKeo's visitor. Dur(ng the conversation of Mr. Johnson and Postmaster McKee It Is alleged that Mr Johnson said: "Mr. Postmaster, Tilson and his crowd have us whipped to a frazzle and we have got to have money to win this fight for the president Mr. Collector Jackson has agreed to give us $1,200 and we want $1,000" from you " Postmaster McKee declined to agree to a contribution of any kind and after a further talk Johnson left tho office. Secretary Donnell, mindful mind-ful of tho section of the act of 18S3, made It known to the postmaster that he heard all that Johnson had said. Subsequently the conversation between be-tween tho postmaster and Johnson was reduced to writing, and sent to Washington for action by the administration, admin-istration, but thus far no stir has been made about It by tho department depart-ment of Justice. oo |
