Show WORKING ON TOE LEAiUE GROUNDS "When I decided to take np Ogden Og-den as headquarters for league ball," said John McCloskej, today, "I undertook under-took to organizes a stock company but local interests wero hardly Intense In-tense enough to subscribe the stock, so I assumed the responsibility myself, my-self, ' said Mr. McCloskey today, "but withal. I have been treated klndlv by the Ogden people and I appreciate It I will show my apreclatlon by furnishing furn-ishing good ball aBll games are won in the field, not In the newspapers, and I am going to got a team together togeth-er that tho Ogden people will not be ashamed of The personnel of the team cannot be given out at this time, statements to the contrary notwithstanding. notwith-standing. When I have decided on the men for the campaign It will bo made known but I will not mention tho names of any players until there Is certainty that I am going to sign them up." Tho storm of tho past two days has retarded work on the. Glenwood park grounds slightly but the diamond will bo ready for use at the time of tho first "tryout" The Wheelwright Construction company, which has the contract for tho grading arV lovellng has a largo forco of men an teams at work and rapid .progress Is being mado on the removal of trees and tho filling of a slight ravlno at the south sido of thetfiroposed baseball grounds. Tho main entrance to the ball grounds will be at tho northwest corner of the park. The grandstand will be erected across the corner and to place tho homo plate well out in front of tho stand. Tho bleachers will bo erepted along tho third base line to the left of the grandstand It will bo necessary to romovo a large number num-ber of trees to accommodate the right Mold The only drawback to the arrangement is the fact that the left field will be the .sun pasture, but this could not woll be avoided. Since breaking ground for the baseball base-ball plant, it has been discovered that a very fine quality of soil will underlay under-lay the diamond and outfield. This soil is very free from rock or flintv substances and. while the going will bo "soft" for tho first season at least, it means that ovontually Ogden will hac a grass Infield and outfield which cannot be equaled in tho league. From the present progress which Is being mado it would seem that the grounds will be ready for early practice prac-tice work by tho end of next wcok, at which time McCloskey purposes to have his out-of-town mon hero for tho two week's training previous to the opening of the schedule season With favorable weather It will not be a difficult matter for the recruits to get into shapo for a practice game between club teams on Sunday, April 7. and tho first exhibition game with Ilelenn club at Provo on tho following follow-ing Saturday. The leaguo season Opens April 23, with Ogden playing Great Falls on tho home diamond.' nn |
