White Lumber company com-pany for the possession of government land near Alder creek, Mendocino county, appealed to Walter L. Fisher, secretary of the Interior, for protection, protec-tion, toda, against what they termed "tho depredations of ten heavily-arm cd gunmen who havo been Imported from San Francisco by the L. E White Lumber company to destroy the jiomesteaders houses and personal property." The land In question Is still unpat- ented federal territory, under government govern-ment control Sheriff R R Byrnes went Into the woods last week to prevent pre-vent violence, but the homesteaders ' still declare they aro in danger and ask permanent protection from the land office The petition to Secretary Fisher, slgne l by twelve homestead crs, Is as follows "Hon. We humbly petition you to use your influence with the United States Marshal Mar-shal and send deputy marshals to the Alder creek country and stop the depredations dep-redations of ten heavily armed gunmen, gun-men, who havo been Imported from San Franolpco by the L 13.
