President Presi-dent Taft was the central figure here today In tho celebration of the fiftieth fif-tieth anniversary of tho birth of Kansas Kan-sas as a state. Governor Stubbs, Senators Sen-ators Curtis and Brlstow and several members, of the Kansas delegation In congress- wero present and again politics poli-tics wns laid aside. All parties and nil factions Joined In the greeting to tho President, and all applauded his tribute to the Sunflower state. Mr. Taft also had something to say of tho Independence of thought In Kansas. "The trials through which the state has come,' he declared, "undoubtedly have given a character to its inhabitants. inhabi-tants. They aro bold and original In thought, courageous In execution. One may differ from them In their conclusions, conclu-sions, elthor upon politics or upon other Issues, but he must respect the sincerity and the energy, Independence Independ-ence and courago with which they support sup-port their conclusions and carry' them to their logical rosulL" In his address Mr. Taft referred at some length to the late Congressman Congress-man E. H Madison, who died suddenly sud-denly a week ago. It was nt Mi". Madison's Invitation that the President Presi-dent came to Hutchinson. "His death was a great shock to me," said the President. "I had not known him long, nor can I say that I knew him intimately; but 1 knew him well enough to know tho strong qualities quali-ties of his mind and heart, his judicial judi-cial Instinct, his Intense desire to be fair, and his clear perceptions of the law as a jurist, and his lovel-hcadcd-necs a6 a legislator. 'I remember a speech which he made In congress on tho subject of excepting lawless combinations of worklngmon from the application of an Injunction. It was a noble, clear oxpo3ltlon of the necogslty for making mak-ing all persons equal before the law and an exhibition of courage and Indifference In-difference to consequences In the support sup-port of a righteous judgment.
