"It is true." said Chancellor Avery, "that student life is characterized by some undesirable features, and always will be, since education cannot well be deferred until the student shall havo become as staid as his parents. In Russian universities we see exhibitions ex-hibitions in tho highest form of ideal-Ism, ideal-Ism, mingled with out nnd out materialism materi-alism and pervaded by a spirit of anarchy. Fortunately For-tunately we are now entering a calmer calm-er and safer period. "Tho self-supporting student is tho salvation of our western Institutions, both educationally and morally; and those unspeakable conditions which Mr. Crane describes as existing in some Institutions, overdrawn though T think they are, nre largely due to tho -presence of the idle rich, whoso Influence everywhere is destructive to scholarship, to manhood and womanhood." |
