"A superb opera superbly acted'' was me veraici oi a rupreJiuimu audience which filled tho Orpheum l heater last night. Those who missed this rare treat deserve the sympathy of any Jpver of tuneful music, for It was a mOBt delighted. crowd which filed ouf at the closo f the performance. perform-ance. It may be far fetched to say there arc "no times like the old times," hut no person who witnessed the production of "Pinafore" as rendered ren-dered by the Salt Lake Musical Comedy Com-edy company by an aggregation of i Salt Lake and Ogden vocalists will say it Is the product of ante-dlluvian mind to testify thp there aro "no operas op-eras like tho old operas." To give credit where credit Is due In a review of this production would occupy considerably more space than i can be spared. Every principal appeared ap-peared to bo perfectly at home In his or her parts, and the chorus was all that could be desired in its support. The ensemble work was really won- I dorful nnd the voices showed careful j training and patlont rehearsing. ! Hugh Dougal as CapL Corcoran was an admirable commanding officer, I and In his duet with Buttercup was most clever. M. J. Brines, with his beautiful tenor voice, charmed his henrers as Ralph Rackstraw He made a most appealing and disconsolate disconso-late lovor and one could not greatly blame tho beautiful Josephine for oapitulatlng In his favor. The duet hi which Ralph tells her of his- love j was well sung and well acted. Mrs. Peery (Josephine) has a most beautiful soprano Voice, with a clear, brilliant tone. She tias remarkable dramatic ability as well, nnd a huge basket of flowers presented by her local admirers attested to the esteem In which she Is held here. Lawrence Greenwell as Sir Joseph Porter was exceptionally well cast. He has a voice of great resonance and power. Dick Deadeye (Fred E. Smith) with his subterranean bass voice contributed much to the merriment merri-ment of the performance. The dancing danc-ing of a sailors' hornpipe by three girls made a decided hit, as did the terpsichorean efforts of the entire chorus. Squire Coop, with an augmented orchestra or-chestra of 20 pieces, was conductor, and every number from the Introductory Intro-ductory chorus to the grand finale showed his ability along musical lines. The scenic effects were all that could be desired, but we cannot re-f'-ain from mentioning the beautiful gowns worn by Mrs. Harold Slegel as Hebe, Mrs W. II. Cunningham as Little Buttercup and Mrs. Peery as Josephino, the latter wearing two creations of exceptional bcautj Mayor Glasmann, In a brief address ad-dress between acts, explained the purpose pur-pose of tho Martha society, for the benefit of which tho opera was staged, and officially thanked the largo audience au-dience for Its support of so worthy an organization. As, ho said, no amount of money would Induce the principals In the production to appear In public, but for charity they were glad to give their services, and those who were In attendance at the Orpheum Or-pheum last night were glad that this was so. The all-star revival of "Pinafore" "Pina-fore" In tho east never received more heartfelt appreciation than did tho participants In "Pinafore" at tho Junction City last night, for which society turned out in full force.
