Show Town Trustees Meet Pass Ordinance Hear License Li-cense "Kicks" Inspect Delinquent Water Rent List. The town trustees met in special session, Wednesday evening, to hear protests against the valuation placed by the board upon stocks of local merchants as a basis for figuring the amount of license to be collected, col-lected, also the board inspected the list of delinquent water-users and took summary action on the same. All members except Trustee Mark-sheffel, Mark-sheffel, were present. The first order of business was the hearing of complaints of merchants mer-chants who thought their stocks were rated unduly high. Sam Cline appeared in -behalf of the Golden Rule store, stating 'that he most strenuously objected to filing a statement of stock which would show an inventory on hand at a time of the year when stocks were always heavy, believing- that the valuation placed on the stock by the trustees was unjust. He thought a general average should be used but stated that this would be a difficult matter to arrive ar-rive at. Because of this difficuly, the Golden Rule had not filed a statement. Discussion of the matter, however, cleared the atmosphere and the Golden Rule will file a statement, state-ment, as required by the trustees, showing a fair average of stock on hand. A. R. Bailey of the Bonneville Lumber Company was also present and showed to the board his inventory, in-ventory, showing about $10,000 worth of stock on hand. By reason of no statement having been filed by the Bonneville people, the board had placed a valuation of $15,000 on the stock. The figures of the inventory in-ventory were accepted by the board. George Jefferson also entered a protest pro-test against the method of computing comput-ing business licenses. Mr. Jefferson stated it as his belief be-lief that the fixing of the amount of a business license by basing it upon the value of the stock carried car-ried was class legislation. He thought that there should be a fiat license for each class of business, all in that business to pay the same license. He gave it as his opinion that the fixing of -the license by a stock valuation, was nothing more or less than an additional tax, in stead of a license to do business. Mr. Jefferson argued that a man might have a $10,000 stock on hand and be doing only an indifferent business, while a "shoe-string" man might come in. invest but a small amount in business, and "throw circles" cir-cles" around his more pretentious rival, in the way of getting the business while paying only a small license for running his business. busi-ness. No result was arrived at by the discussion, but the bringing up of the matter may lead to a change along this line. E. H. Street, C. T. Woodbury and Dr. O. E. Adkin applied for permits to erect dwellings in Lewis Addition. Same were granted. F. J. Connor asked permission to erect a temporary tem-porary shooting gallery on the vacant va-cant lot adjoining the Atkin hotel. The request was granted and a license li-cense of $5 fixed. Messrs. Kissler, George Baxter, D. B. James and Cameron Arrington, also requested permission to build, the latter desiring to add one room to his dwelling. These requests were granted. Ordinance No. 28 fixing water rates, laid over for future consideration. consider-ation. Ordinance No. 27, appointing appoint-ing water master, etc., was read and adopted. The delinquent water rent list was presented to the board by the Clerk and considered. The total amount unpaid was $74 2. IS. The board derided that summary action was necessary to bring the delinquents delin-quents to time, and instructed the marshal to at on turn off the wa-! wa-! tor supply of every delinquent who had not "kicked through." This action was the cause of some amusement amuse-ment and fun, from the fact that some of the persons present in the room, had neglected to suuare up with the city, and there was tin immediate im-mediate hustling out of check books and writing of checks. The trustees felt that consumers who had not paid their water rentals rent-als had been given every opportunity opportun-ity to do so even to an extreme point, and that the only way to get action was to at once shut olT the supply. The city needs all t lie collections col-lections it can get in, to take care of til o town's expenses, which are heavy and growing, and it was the opinion of the members that they could no longer permit such a condition con-dition to exist. A general discussion along various lines of city business was bad by the board and it was along toward 11 o'clock when they finally adjourned. ad-journed. At the close of the meeting, meet-ing, the trustees, on Invitation of Mr. M. J. Westerfield. one of the owners of the News, who spent two weeks here, installing the new plant for the News, visited the News office of-fice and inspected the splendid equipment, expressing themselves as very much pleased with the Improvements Improve-ments and witli tb" spirit of enterprise enter-prise anil the faith in .Milford, which prompted Messrs. Carlton and Westerfield West-erfield to give the county and town sueh an up-to-date establishment. The board meets to hear pro-j pro-j tests which may be presented against the extension of the sewer syst'-nj in th'.- northern part of the town. |
