Show Chatter Box... Dear Suzy, The Aeronautics Day is now a thing of the past. It was just like March, it started off like a lion and then dwindled to the like efforts of a new-born lamb. There is no good reason for that unless the guys that flocked the airport were too petered to get out later in the evening. eve-ning. It was good, though, and everybody every-body and their dog was at the airport air-port to see the sights. The regular fliers had their three training planes, and an old Eaglerock on the field as well as a Culver Cadet Cad-et from Brigham City, and a cute and ducky little Ercoupe owned by a Mr. Christopherson. It took the people's fancy and had large crowds hanging about with their tongues out a foot. It had but one control and operated like an automobile, auto-mobile, so that the pilot had little to do besides smoke cigars and thumb his nose as he went past the countryside at great speed. The CAP fliers put on a show for the multitude and went through all kinds of plain and fancy flying. Ninety-seven necks were badly wrenched trying to follow all three planes in their antics. An air view of the people on the ground would have been just one big mouth. After Aft-er the show the fliers took passengers pas-sengers up for trips over the town which kept up for r.eurs, it seemed. seem-ed. Then to climax the whole thing in came a B-24, that was being be-ing ferried across the country, for a landing here as the weather kept theYn from getting into Salt Lake. I suppose the pilots in the bomber thought they were being mobbed as the crowd streaked over the field to see at close quarters quar-ters that famed type of plane. It stayed over night and then took off the next day. Governor and Mrs. Maw arrived just before six to attend the banquet ban-quet as well as more dignitaries EXPERT WATCH MAKER WANTED Watch. They served the banquet very nicely nice-ly and had the place tastefully decorated. The tables were set a-bout a-bout to represent an airplane on the ground. The speeches at the banquet were excellent, as they were all short, most of them being about one sentence. Lieut. Cmdr. Wakefield gave a very interesting talk on the happenings hap-penings at Pearl Harbor on that well-remembered December 7th. He was visiting here with the Birds having been converted to the LDS church by Evan Bird while Evan was on his mission in Hawaii. Lieut. Cmdr. Wakefield was on a furlough and wanted to see Utah, Salt Lake City and especially some of the high church officials. Then we come to the sad part of the day. After the banquet an open forum was planned at which Gov. Maw, Major Joe Bergin, County Coun-ty and City officials would talk on aviation and explain the progress and development of it in the State and locally. Questions were to be answered by those on the stand and all phases of aviation were to be thoroughly covered. There was but one question during the evening and that was, "Where Is the Crowd?" It seems as though all of the people had business someplace else that evening so that about 50 people met as the audience and there were 12 on the stand. Add these two together and you have a mighty small crowd when you consider that it was the Governor who was the principal speaker for the evening. But, I guess it would be that way at any type of meeting where you could learn something. West Millardites don't want to learn, they want action. Up at the airport air-port the crowd was gay and numerous. num-erous. Going from one plane to another and fighting for a chance to ride on one of "them things." But, when it comes to sitting in a meeting for an hour listening to theory on aviation and kindred subjects the people all get ants in . their pants and can't sit that long in one place. Maybe the CAP fliers have the answer. They all say, "We have never been in such an air-minded air-minded community." Now, that might be a dirty dig. A couple of wrecks caused a little lit-tle excitement this past week. The first one came late Saturday night when a young guy from Minersville got tired of running along on his wheels and decided to try it upside down for a spell. His method was a great saver on tires as the truck came to a sudden stop. Also it will save a lot on the tires as the driver driv-er is now guest of the Ctiy in their special hotel. He has 25 days to think it over. The driver was well equipped with liquor permits, as 1 he had two but he had no driv- |
