Show Aeronautics Day Draws Many To Delta Airport Governor Maw Attends Banquet and Forum In the Evening Local air enthusiasts jammed the Delta airport Saturday afternoon when tile Aeronautics Day was commenced. The planes were busy throughout the afternoon stunt flying and then later carrying passengers pas-sengers by the scores. The people were greeted at the field through the loud speaker system sys-tem by Mayor Black, Grant Snow, Ward Moody and Kimball Larsen. After the short talks given by these men the balance of the afternoon aft-ernoon was spent looking at the planes, stunt-flying by the CAP men here, and then finished up with wholesale rides by the people. peo-ple. Banquet The banquet was scheduled for six o'clock in the Delta High school gym. The tables were set in the position of an aeroplane, tastefully decorated, with a small relief map back of the speakers table ta-ble displaying miniature planes made by members of the Aeronautics Aeronau-tics club. Speeches at the banquet were very short with the men waiting wait-ing until later at the open forum to give their full talks. Lt. Cmdr. Wakefield of the U. S. Navy spoke at this time relating his experiences experi-ences on the day of Pearl Harbor. His talk and views of the attack were most interesting, in which he related many close calls from bombs while on his way reporting for . duty. Lt. Cmdr. Wakefield spoke again on Sunday night to the Delta First Ward members. Grant Snow turned the meeting over to Glen Seegmiller, who was the master of ceremonies at the banquet and introduced all the guests to the people. Entertainment Entertain-ment numbers were a reading by Mrs. Paul Adams and an accordion accordi-on solo by the Losee boy. Open Forum After the banquet the group reassembled re-assembled in the auditorium for the open forum which was presided pre-sided over by Glen Snow, president presi-dent of Dixie College. Major Joe Bergin was first speaker and gave a history of aviation in Utah, with special stress applied to the excellent excel-lent airport built in Delta this past year. He told that it was the second sec-ond largest civilian airport in Utah, and second to none for availability without obstructions. Gov. Maw Speaks - Gov. Maw spoke on the future of aviation comparing it with the views concerning automobiles during dur-ing World War I. He stated that it was his opinion that airplanes would be as plentiful and as much in use after this war as the automobile auto-mobile was after the first war. He complimented Delta on the excellence excel-lence of the field here. He reported report-ed that the State had ear-marked $3,500 to help in building the hangar han-gar here and hoped that the hangar han-gar could be built as soon as possible. pos-sible. Bishop A. O. Gardner spoke stating stat-ing that the county had $3,000 ready for use on the field, which was an amount equal to what the commissioners had given Fillmore for their field. Mark Johnson also spoke during the evening as a member of the county commission. Heport by Mayor Black Mayor Black reported the meeting meet-ing at Santa Monica and related how other towns were particularly anxious to build airports. He especially espe-cially mentioned Vernal which had $40,000 ready to buy land and compared com-pared it with the $1,200 that was spent here for the lands. He also stated that the City Council was ready to authorize work on Ihe hangar as soon as suitable building build-ing material could be had. He stated that the large girders were holding them up more than any other thing. Other speakers at the forum were Supt. Maughn, Principles, Seegmiller and Buchanan, Lt. Cmdr. Wakefield, Grant Snow, Glen Snow, and Mr. Manning of the UEA. The day can be considered most successful in bringing to light many of the problems confronting the building of the hangar, which seems to be the main point at issue. is-sue. The Governor related that State's money was ready to be put into the hangar. Com. Gardner said that the counly had their share ready, and Mayor Black staled that the City was ready, but lacked lack-ed the materials. |
