Show THE LABOR AND SUPPLY BUREAU OF CACHE COUNTY Among the worth-while movements inaugurated during the year to meet the emergencies that the uncertainties uncertain-ties of the war have confronted us with was the establishment of the I abor and Supply Uurcati. The initiative in this commendable act of foresight was taken by the mayor and the Commercial Iloostcrs' Club. This was back in April just in time to provide ways and .means of supplying seeds for planting and of helping to provide labor during the growing and harvesting season. The organization consists of local committees in the various cities and towns of the county, representatives from each of which, when assembled together, form the central committee, and this body controls the policy of the bureau. Mr. E. R. Owen is the chairman and E. V. Robinson the executive secretary of the organization. organ-ization. The services of the bureau arc absolutely free for all concerned. During the spring months hundreds of dollars worth of seeds were advanced ad-vanced to those not in a position to purchase the same a thatt time, and all told, more than 110,000 pounds of potatoes and great quantities of barley, beans etc., were located for people who were unable to find seeds. Due to the Bureau's work the la bor situation has at no time been as acute in Cache County as in most other localities. Nearly a thousand names, male and female, arc on the icgistcr, and a call over the phone for help has usually resulted in bringing employer and employee together. to-gether. By keeping an account of the wherebouts of laborers, and the duration of the jobs to which they were assigned, it has been possible to so shift them about that none remained idle, and employers had the benefit of the full capacity of the labor within the county. In the matter of supplies, the Bureau has striven to bring seller and buyer together to the end that the people have been able to dispose ol their surplus, or purchase their necessities, with no further effort than a request at the office, and this without paying commissions on either side. The finances of the Bureau have so far been provided through the generosity gen-erosity of the county commissioners Logan City, and some of the larger corporations of the valley. So idinspcnsible is the Bureau now considered htat these contributors have been sufficient to enable it to continue throughout the winter, and from all appearances it will become a permanent factor in affording a profitable and convenient means of handling some of the economic affairs of Cache County. |
