Show MAIL ORDERS VS. HOME STORES. Right In line with our recent remarks re-marks about supplying our wants at the stores of our own town is the following fol-lowing item from the Preston News: "The failure of J. J. Hill at Franklin Frank-lin Is to be deplored. 'The' pernicious habit of patronizing the eastern mall order houses by citizens of that city Is directly responsible for the condition and we are Informed that many peoplo knife the home merchant for mall order or-der concerns " The mall order habit is taking on wonderful proportions. It has Its place only on tho rcmoto farm or hamlet, ham-let, or in towns poorly equipped with stores and certainly should not Interfere Inter-fere with the business of the Logan stores to which New York and Chicago Chi-cago drummers being tho latest styles and novelties. In the cases where the mall order tlrms undersell the home stores the goods arc almost sure to bo of inferior quality. We recall the shoddy material, poor tit and general air of cheap tawdrlness of mall order suits of clothes that men of our acquaintance ac-quaintance have bought and the advantage ad-vantage Is all on the side of the neat garments that we may buy at any of our clothiers for men whereafter care fulselectlon and examination of the goods, we may have them fitted by a competent tailor. The same is true of hats and gowns. At first they may have a certain air of style but they do not stand the test of durability and they soon arrive at the shabby, illmsy stage. There Is another side of the question which Is not often considered. consid-ered. An essential clement to the success and happiness of a town Is the newspaper. No paper can exist with out support and it is tho advertising of the large stores that is the chief financial prop of the local paper. It's the business men of any town that mako or destroy a paper and, if tho mall order business kills the local trade, tho papers sutler at the same time. It is only another phrase of the Interdependence of tho various parts of the business world and wo should reflect re-flect long and carefully before we yield to the meretricious advertising of the seductive but unreliable mall order catalogues. |
