Show Cedar City Little Leaguers advance to Western Finals with close 3-2 win It's on to California and the Western Regional finals for the Cedar City National Little Lea-gue. Lea-gue. The Cedar City team traveled to Hill Air Force Base Saturday evening to take on Rosecrest of Salt Lake City and the right to represent Utah in the region finals. In a battle of pitching the Cedar City team came out victorious vic-torious with a 3-2 victory de-spite de-spite the fact that Cedar was held to a single hit and that Rosecrest picked up only two hits in the contest. Coaches Greg Neilson and Brent Blackner will take their 14 young chargers, 11 and 12 years of age to the Western Regional Little League complex com-plex at San Bernardino, Calif, where they will challenge 12 other Western State champions for the right to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. Cedar City National will meet the Idaho State champions Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. (11 a.m. Cedar City time) in their opening game of the tournament. Winner of that game will meet the California State champions in the second round of action. Kevan Robinson was on the ENROUTE TO CALIFORNIA. He gave up his first of two hits in the second inning of play, a home run to Wayne Jameson, to put Rosecrest out in front 1-0. It was the third when Cedar came . bouncing back. Brent Slack batting In the ninth spot started the frame with a walk. He moved to third on a double by Gary Jack. Jack's double was the only hit for the Cedar team. Slack came on to score the tieing run on a fielders choice by Dean DeMille and Jack scored the go ahead run without benefit of a hit oh a n passed ball. In the fourth, Rosecrest came back to knot the score at 2 -all. Lee Bendall walked, moved to second and third on wild pitches pitch-es and came on to score on an error by the catcher. In the fifth Cedar went back in front with the winning run. DeMille reached first on an error, er-ror, moved to second when Robinson walked, stole third base and came on to score on an error by the Rosecres catcher. The action was not over, however. how-ever. In the top of the sixth the fist two men for Rosecrest went out, but Robinson gave up a walk to Bendall. He moved to second on a wild pitch then came on to score what was believed be-lieved to be the tieing run on a single by pitcher Steve Clark of Rosecrest. However, Bendall missed home plate, was tagged out by Cedar, nullifying the run for the third out. Cedar American was the state champion last year and advanced to the Western finals in California. Cedar National will be the second representative to the Western finals from Cedar City in as many years.
