Show S Local Notes Development to follow? As noted in Thursday's City Council meeting, a public hearing will be held in the near future concerning the abandonment of a Union Pacific track loop in the 200 North and Main Street area of Cedar City. Following the Interstate Commerce Commission's decision, most likely positive, the land will then be in the hands of local owners to develop further. fur-ther. City officials have indicated they favor the abandonment as it will make for a better commercial area along North Main if replaced by more desirable buildings such as a shopping center. They also stated a dock will most likely be built by Union Pacific in the vincinity of 200 to 300 West, replacing the loop near the depot. One person involved in the development of the land around the depot, L. Robert Gardner, said Union Pacific has already made their committment com-mittment to sell to Cedar City interests, contingent on the ICC decision. "The original idea and what's been thought all the way along has been to turn the area into a shopping center," Gardner said, "although that isn't 100 percent sure because the land hasn't become available yet." Gardner said he was "not in a position to say" whether the land would stay in local hands or be turned over to outside developers. About 12 acres are involved, he added. Chris Ronnow, also a local interest, said the financing of the land itself is still pending. He said the future plans of the area is "too sensitive" to discuss at this time. All parties are waiting for the ICC public hearing. |
