The Cedar City Big League Tournament Team suffered an opening round loss at the hands of the Colorado State Champions, South Denver, 8-2 in tournament tour-nament action in Tucson, Arizona Monday evening. Plagued by six errors, the Cedar City crew could not hold down the strong Denver club, despite a good showing by pitcher David Middleton. Middleton went the distance on the mound for Cedar City allowing 8 hits and the eight runs, six of which were unearned. Middleton also collected seven strikeouts in the contest. Cedar City scattered six hits in the contest led by Brad Larson and Robert Morris, each going 2 for 3 at the plate. Gary Jack added a single and an RBI, with David Middleton adding a bunt single for the six Cedar hits. Cedar scored their two runs in the top half of the . fifth inning. Dale Corry started the inning with a base on balls, and then moved to second on a balk by the Denver pitcher. Larson then singled moving Corry to third. Middleton then laid a bunt on the chalk down the third base line to load the GOES THE DISTANCE. David "Gumpy" Middleton went the distance in Cedar Big League's first game in Tuscon, Arizona against the Colorado champions. bases with no outs at that point. Robert Morris then collected an RBI by drawing a walk, scoring Corry and Gary Jack sacrificed to score Larson. Cedar City ended the inning leaving two men still on base. The three-team tournament tour-nament is a double elimination affair. Cedar City played again late Tuesday evening, meeting the loser of the Denver-Tucson Denver-Tucson game. |
