Show Youth study Range Management A select group of junior and senior high school students interested in range management are stationed at the 3,000 acre Southern Utah State College Ranch this week as participants in a Range Youth Camp. The 12-17 year old students are studying the various aspects of successful range management as guests of B- the Utah Section, Society for ; Range Management, and SUSC. They represent junior and senior high school from across the state. "The Range Youth Camp is designed to show youngsters the value of careful range management and to encourage promising students to pursue careers in the field," James E. Downs, associate professor of forestry and range management at SUSC, said. The 2G students attending the camp were nominated by their county agents and by the vocational agriculture teachers at their respective schools. "Included in the week-long agenda are studies in general range management, plant identification, range condition and trends, ranch planning, range improvements, im-provements, multiple-use of range lands, and range ecology," Dr. Bowns said. The group spends most of the day in the field, staying at the College Cabin each night. They also visit the SUSC campus daily for indoor academic sessions and to make use of college recreational facilities. The jointly sponsored program is being directed by Dr. Fee Busby, Utah State University Department of Range Science, and several additional specialists trained in range management. |
