Show Election Filing Deadline Nears Two "I haven't decided" and one "I certainly am" are the responses from Cedar City officials whose terms expire at the end of they year as they ponder their future political plans. Filing deadline for municipal elections elec-tions is September 19, according to the County Clerk's office, and at present it appears no one has filed for any of the city offices. When contacted, however, city councilman Leslie Burbidge, who filled the unexpired term of Gam Huskinson in early 1976, said he is "certainly going to run" this November. He said he will be vying for the councilman post again and also expressed hopes present Mayor Kerry Jones will run for reelection. re-election. Burbidge, a focal dentist, is a Republican. Mayor Jones said he is not sure at this point in time whether he will seek re-election or not. The first term Republican mayor said he felt "it was up to the convention (party nominating conventions) more than to any one man to decide." Jones did say he had 12 years of city politics already and his business interests in-terests were becoming more and more time-consuming. Jones served two terms as a city councilman before his present four-year mayoral stint. The other city council post that will be open is presently held by Robert Stratton. The one-term Republican said he had no decision at this time. "I'm going to v ait a while before I make any decision," Stratton said. Any city resident can file or selections selec-tions can be made by the nominating conventions held by both parties just after the filing deadline. When more than one candidate per party is vying for the open post, the convention can act as a primary election, narrowing the party's candidate to one. |
