Show f f oijgues 1 I by and I JayWamsley CCCliS J America broadcasted a sad commentary on itself recently, as hundreds of news articles have lanented, as hordes of looters and arsenists made a spectacle of New York City. Analysists and social theorists and masses of Freudian Slips will be looking at the massive one-night crime wave in search of motivations behind the plundering. Many will say it is another evidence of the unemployment and disenchantment and inflation and social unrest and so on and so on.... But gangs of men do not load seven television sets into the vehicles because their grandmothers are suffering for the sight of Johnny Carson in living color. A man does not carry away ten $500 bicycles because he has ten children crying at home for them. These were people who steal not to eat but to sell. The worst ravages in the blackout were not from civil unrest but from crime as a disciplined craft. I'll be the first to say I don't know why the looting was so much worse this summer than several years ago when a similar blackout occurred. What do you think? I guess it all just bears up the fact that Old Scratch really is a woman. Don't believe me, hugh? Well, doesn't it say in the scriptures, "The devil was abroad in the land?" Sorry about that. Vernile Terry is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I don't know what he is getting paid, but it should be more. Vernile, as many know, is the operator of the new Cedar City sewage treatment facility. The place is not the best of working conditions and at times it does get a little ripe, but Vernile keeps improving the place and always looking ahead. He also is not one to grumble about state regulations and agencies that ask for higher standards at the plant. He supports sup-ports the regulations the best he can. And, something I appreciate, he is very open and cordial to the media. Everything is "above board" and ready for inspection in-spection from his end of things. Say Hello to him if you see him around and about. |
