McManu Helmont, Massachusetts Jimmy Jim-my Carter is no reporter's dream come true. His speeches, press conferences, and interviews are not loaded with the quotable one-liners that modern-day journalists jour-nalists love to pounce on. There is, nevertheless, plenty of substance sub-stance in what the President says. And even though few take note of it, the Carter words and deeds betray the most blatant pro-Communist posture ever to emerge from the White House. May 22 commencement address at Notre Dame University: "Being confident of our own future, we are now free of that inordinate fear of Communism which once led us to embrace any dictator who joined us in our fear." "I believe in detente with the Soviet Union." "It is important that we make progress toward normalizing relations re-lations with the People's Republic Repub-lic of China." "Colonialism has nearly gone." To tho United States truly reserves tne ngni to accept or reject any or all bids or to waive any formality or technicality in any bid in the ',' interest of the school ; district. Board of Education Iron County School t District by Kent F. Peterson Clerk -Treasurer i; Pub. June 2, 9, 16, 1977. I Korea and the General Only a few weeks ago, Major General John K. Singlaub was ordered to Washington from his post in Korea. After thirty-four years of distinguished service, the General was brought before the President like a third-grader who had just broken a window. Mis crime: He had voiced con- ;ern lest a planned withdrawal 1 )f 32,000 U.S. troops from South Korea invite attack by the North Koreans. The President quickly reassigned reas-signed him after a public reprimand, repri-mand, saying that the General's opinion was "inconsistent with announced national security policy." pol-icy." But Congressional leaders were quick to point out that the troop withdrawal was nws to them, and that the obvious change in U.S. policy had not been "announced." Then, on May 29, U.S. News and World Report released an interview with Mr. Carter wherein where-in he defended the troop withdrawal with-drawal and added that South Korea would be protected by America's nuclear might. Yet, only four months earlier, President Pres-ident Carter in his inaugural address ad-dress had named as his one specific spe-cific goal "the elimination of all nuclear weapons from the earth." Thus, he must be preparing prepar-ing to abandon South Korea to the Reds. Carter at Notre Dame The Singlaub incident is not the only reason why we are convinced con-vinced that the President is leaning lean-ing the wrong way. Consider the following excerpts from his free of the fear of Communism? Commu-nism? Why then do we spend $100 billion for defense? Is our fear of Communism inordinate? inordi-nate? Perhaps we should ask the Cambodians, Laotians, and South Vietnamese, who are presently pres-ently being given lethal doses of Communist peace. If it was ever wrong to "embrace" "em-brace" an anti-Communist dictator dic-tator (Chiang? Franco? Sala-zar?), Sala-zar?), how can it now be right to embrace Communist dictators? Of detente, one prominent Red dictator, Leonid Brezhnev, said in 1973: ". . . we are achieving with detente what our predecessors predeces-sors have been unable to achieve using the mailed fist ... . Come 1985, we will be able to exert our will wherever we need to." And what is to be gained by "normalizing" relations with Red China? Are we about to starting building up the Chinese Reds as we have built up the Soviet Communists? And how can Jimmy Carter say that "colonialism "co-lonialism is nearly gone"? Only last year he was vilifying his opponent op-ponent in the election for overlooking over-looking the Soviet troops stationed sta-tioned all over Eastern Europe. Perhaps when the Communists occupy a nation, it is not colonialism? colo-nialism? The Carter utterances bear close watching. At Notre Dame, our President told us of the existence exis-tence of "new historical circumstances." circum-stances." Could it be that one of those is the President's willingness willing-ness to go along with Communism's Commu-nism's designs? It surely looks that way to us. 1977 The John Birch Society Features FOR INFORMATION CONCERNING THE BIRCH LOG, CALL: BILL REAGAN 588-6228 CARLOAD CLEARANCE SALE Insulation Owens-Corning Fiberglass R-ll Kraft Face Attic Insulation 3x15" $729 R. 19 Friction Fit 70' Roll Ea- 6" x 15" -40 sq.ft.
