Show Maybe we'll enjoy the Bicentennial more the Second Time Around PAROWAN -1 hope you are all enjoying the Bicentennial celebration. I've really tried to go along with it and I'm excited about it, but things just haven't gone well for me. First of all, when the City Bicentennial Committee asked everyone to plant red, white, and blue petunias, I ran right out to buy some and I've watered and tended them faithfully. When they finally bloomed last week, my red, white, and blue display turned out to be red, pink, and purple. Then there were the colonial Bicentennial tlme, I even considered buying a beautiful red, white, and blue toilet seat, but I controlled myself-mostly due to the fact that my bathroom is pink. We did buy red, white and blue sox and they were responsible for the fact that we are all now wearing underwear with a slight pink tinge. The neighbors can testify to the fact that we play lots of patriotic dresses everyone was making. The pattern is so cute and fuffly, but those fitted waists show every single little bulge. I have seen a couple of ladies who look really cute in them, but it didn't take long for me to realize that that particular pattern was just not for me. I just seem to bulge out where the pattern darts in. They have a pattern for the men too and it is really handsome. My husband said sure, he'd wear one if I could find someone big enough to knock him out and stuff him into it. So, as a result, we missed the Colonial Ball. It may be years before we have another chance to do the minuet. We bought T-shirts for our sons with Keep America Clean printed in red, white, and blue on the backs. They went off mumbling, "how gross" and put on their paper-thin white ones with the sleeves and bottoms cut off and a faded pop commercial on the back. . , . I've tried to buy everything I could that carried out, the music. John Phillip Sousa never dreamed of as many drum parts as we hear all day every day. Do you suppose "Get' Up and Boogie" could qualify as Bicentennial music?, We are trying hard to do our bit as American citizens. We've been hoarding a few of the new $2 bills and we do our share of complaining about taxes and high prices and we are sick of politicians who take hours of time on TV without ever making one firm commitment or understandable un-derstandable statement. We are still using gasoline in spite of all the lectures about conserving, but, I just haven't been able to convince my husband that he should , jog the scenic route to Cedar to work in the mornings and I don't even seem to be able to make it to the post office on foot. Some people say we should all go back to horses, but with hay $3 a bale, I think cars are cheaper. I am looking forward to the 4th of July in Parowan. My only regret is that I won't get to sleep out and hear the dynamite salute early in the morning. I mentioned men-tioned it to Norm and he mumbled mum-bled something about growing up and acting your age. I wish Karen, Elaine, Maxine, Elrea, LaVonna, Eleen, and Joan were ' 'here-they would understand how to celebrate properly. |
