Show 4 Cedar High School Track Team looked good in earning Third Place at Dixie Meet ; ' - ) ' UP. UP AND AWAY. Kim Nielson of the Cedar High School Redmen clears the bar at six feet 10 inches at the Dixie Invitational Track and Field Meet. The leap set a new meet record and shattered the old state high jumping mark. . Cedar High School track and field team will take 76 participants par-ticipants to a duel meet today, Thursday, with Dixie High School. The meet will be run in two sections with a varsity and a sophmore division, according to Coach Jack Bishop. The Redmen placed third in the Dixie Invitational last week against some of the strongest competition in the state. Tieing for meet honors in the upper division of the competition was Dixie and Spanish Fork, each with 68 points. The Redmen were a close 53 followed by Jordan with 48. Others in the meet included in-cluded Basic of Nevada, Clearfield, White Pine of Nevada and Murray High Schools. Highlight of the meet was the record set by Kim Nielsen in the high jump. Neilson cleared the bar at six feet 10 inches to set a new meet record, breaking the existing state Class 3A standard and tied the existing state record which was set by Clyde Baker of Bountiful in 1968. Baker's effort was in the 4A class competition. Neilsen also picked up a third place in the long jump, a third in the javelin and was on the mile relay team that finished fourth. Over all he accounted for 12 of the Redmen points. Another first for the Redmen was Vance Matheson in the In-. In-. termediate hurdles. He finished with a 41.8 timing which was good enough to set a new state 3A record. In the two-mile run Richard Adams took second place with a time of 10:09, his second best effort. Both he and the first place finisher eclipsed the old 3A standard in the race. Jay Jones finished third in the race to add points to the Redman totals. Brad Jackson was the other really bright spot for the Redmen in the sprints Jackson place second in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes, but with excellent times. Jackson had a 9.9 timing in the trials, the best in the meet over the second and was barely nipped at the tape in the finals, which was run in 10 flat. In the 220 his second place timing was 22.9 against the winning time of 22.7. Brad is only a sophomore and has ulimited potential, according ac-cording to his coach Jack Bishop Heres how others on the team fared: Long Jump: Brent Lejfis, second; Neilson third and Robert Morris fifth. Shot Put: Joe Wells, second. Javelin: Neilson, third, Brent Foley fifth, Joe Wells qualified for state but did not place in this event. 100 yard dash: Brad Jackson, . second; Vance Matheson, fourth with a time of 10.4. Brian Jackson ran a 10.3 century in the trials to qualify for the state meet, but did not place in the finals. The Redmen placed fourth in the mile relay. Team members included Neilsen, Brad Jackson, Mat Galloway and Jay Esplin. They picked up a fifth in the medley with team members Brian Jackson, Robert Morris, Neil Giles and Marty Olson. The sprint relay team was disqualified and did not place. Following the duel meet with Dixie today, the Redmen will prepare for a three-way meet to be hosted in Cedar City by Southern Utah State College at Thunderbird stadium. The meet is set for Tuesday, April IS and will include Kanab, Panguitch and the Redmen. ; , u . . ' i ?' |
