Show VVilma Petty to discuss Home Preperation of Foods at College There was a time whea extensive ex-tensive home canning was the most economical way to feed a family. Now it isn't always so according to one Cedar City homemaker. And, she notes, a hundred quarts of peaches look mighty pretty on the shelf, but if they go uneaten, they represent only a waste of time and money. Home canning, the process and practicalities involved, will be discussed today, Thursday at Southern Utah State College beginning at 3 p.m. in the Old Amdinistration Building, room 306. "Putting Up with 'Putting Up' : Freezing, Canning and Drying," will be presented by Mrs. Wilma' Petty, Cedar City homemaker and her daughter, Artis Petty Grady, SUSC instructor of nutritional food science. The meeting is free to the public and is the third in the series "The High Cost of Living: What You Can Do About It," being co-sponsored by the Iron County Extension Service and the SUSC Women's Resource Committee. "We will discuss the basic canning techniques for those who don't know anything about it and will also present new methods which should be of interest to the experienced canner," Mrs. Petty said. The basic aspects of home canning will be covered including in-cluding the assessment of needs, preparation of equipment, availability of supply and canning can-ning processes. Mrs. Petty notes that, in conjunction with preparation of equipment, a Pressure Cooker Testing Day will be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cedar Stake Center, 155 East 400 South, sponsored by the County Extension Ex-tension Office. |
