Winners of the two RMAC divisions will meet March 3 at the home court of the Western Division winner to determine the RMAC champion. The RMAC champ will participate in a four-team playoff March 9-10 in Pocatello, Idaho, for a district championship. That winner goes on to national competition. But for the T-Birds, it all depends on how they do this weekend. The Thunderbird women host Mesa College Friday and Western State College Saturday. Both games will start at 7 p.m. in War Memorial Fieldhouse. Both Western State and SUSC are in the thick of the battle for leadership of the RMAC's Western Division. Mesa is pretty much out of the running for the conference con-ference title, but the Thunderbird women can't afford to be upset by the Mavericks. SUSC won two of three games last week on an extended ex-tended road trip. Victories came over a tough Snow College team (72-69) and Ricks College (73-71). The lone loss came at Pocatello, Idaho, against Idaho State University (74-67). The current SUSC record is 11-3 in all games; in RMAC competition, the 'Birds have won twice and lost once. "Chris Tea has been playing her best of the season in recent games," Joyu Peterson SUSC coach says. SUSC lost a 14 point lead against Western State-also in mid-January--and was eventually nipped by the Mountaineers (68-61) in Gunnison, Colorado. In that game Melanie Smith, a 5-10 junior, scored 19 points, and Kari Montrose, a 5-10 sophomore, hit for 13 counters. "We didn't play very well at Western State; I would expect that we'll do better here," Peterson says. On last week's road trip Tea had 19 points at Snow and again at Ricks. Susan Pederson, who leads SUSC scoring, hit for 15 at Snow and 20 at Ricks. Hendrix scored 12 against Snow, 28 at ISU, and 13 at Ricks. Cleveland hit 12 points at Snow and 13 at ISU; she also hauled down 16 rebounds against the Bengals. |
