The A.D.A. message this year is that good nutrition is important to an individual's dental health. Everyone should know that sugar causes tooth decay. What most people don't know, however, is that the risk of tooth decay depends on how often instead of how much ' sugar is eaten daily. Each time sugar is eaten it is turned into acid dental plaque, and the acidity, which is strong enough to dissolve tooth enamel remaines high for about 20 minutes. Dr. W. H. Bowen of the National Institute of Dental Research, Bethesda, Md., declared that "A person who customarily has only three meals a day, even if they are rich in sugar is at less risk than another who consumes a smaller amount of sweets, but nibbles them all day." Eating a well-balance well-balance diet and eliminating as much sugar as possible is one of the biggest factors in promoting a healthy mouth and teeth. Proper brushing and flossing after meals lessen the chance of tooth decay even more. National Childrens Dental Health Week is being observed ob-served from February 4 through the 10th. The theme is "Smile America, Sweet Snacks No.... Sweet Smiles Yes!" Joining the cause to promote better dental health this year is State Bank of Southern Utah. The bank has agreed to give fruit at its tellers windows instead of candy along with a little reminder to eat fruit for snacks. The reminder will be given to all children in cars visiting the drive-in windows and can be redeemed for fruit at Lin's Thriftway.
