Show Bertha W. Mitchell, 80, dies, funeral rites on Wednesday Mrs. Bertha Whitney Mitchell, Mitch-ell, 80, prominent lifelong resident res-ident of Parowan, died at Valley Val-ley View Medical Center Sunday Sun-day evening from natural causes. Funeral services were held for her Wednesday at 2 p. m. in the Parowan Third Ward chapel with Bishop Val Hyatt Bentley conducting. Burial Bur-ial was in the Parowan cem-tery. cem-tery. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Parowan Sept. 10, 1871, a daughter of New S. and Sarah Whitney, her father was the first white child born in Parowan. Par-owan. She married W. Scott Mitchell June 12, 1913 in the St. George LDS Temple and they were parents of five children, chil-dren, four of whom survive. A son, Gordon died while serv-ing serv-ing as a missionary for the LDS Church in Kansas in 1941. The deceased was an active member of the LDS church and one of the first organists for her ward organizations., the Primary, MIA and Relief Society. So-ciety. She served on the Sunday Sun-day School and Relief Society Stake boards; was the ward I Relief Society president for a R few years, and was a teacher in that organization for many years. When 66 she played the organ for DUP meetings. She and her husband man-aged man-aged the Parowan show house for many years, starting with the advent of talking pictures. Her survivors, in addition to her husband, are two sons and two daughters: Mrs. Benson Ben-son (Alice) Haycock, Salt Lage City; Kent W. Mitchell, Og-den; Og-den; Mrs. Watson (Veda) Adams, Parowan, and New Merton Mitchell, Las Vegas. Also surviving are 19 grand- children and 23 great-grandchildren. The prelude and postlude music was by Itha Mortensen Musical numbers included two songs by the Singing Mothers, "Sister, Thou Wast Mild and Lovely", and "Peace I Leave With You.' under the direction of Vyonne Chamberlain with : Mrs. Mortensen at the piano; and an organ medley by the latter. ! Speakers were Mrs. Imogene A. Timmons, who gave a short history of Mrs. Mitchell, and D. Watson Adams.a son-in law, with remarks by Bishop Bentley. The family prayer was by Gaylord Whitney, nephew; the opening prayer was by Larry Haycock, grandson; the benediction was by Osmer K. Nielsen, ard the grave was dedicated by a son, Kent V. Mitchell. Pallbearers were Larry Hay-cook, Hay-cook, Rodney Adams, Merton Mitchell, Jr., Jeffery Mitchell, grandsons, and Benson Haycock, Hay-cock, son-in-law and Gordon Adams, a son. Flowers were under the direction of the ONO Club and granddaughters, Karen Ka-ren M. Miller, Marsha M. Long, Mary Jane Mitchell and Colleen Haycock. |
