Show C. S. U. baseball team travels to Phoenix to open season play "Very frankly, I feel we are stepping out of our class, at least for games this early in the season," Cleo Petty, College Col-lege of Southern Utah Baseball Base-ball Coach, said this week. The Thunderbird baseball team opens competition Friday Fri-day and Saturday at Phoenix j against nationally ranked Grand Canyon College. "They have been practicing outdoors for weeks, and they already have three games behind them," Petty pointed out. CSU has been outdoors once, last Saturday when the T-Birds T-Birds traveled to St. George for a cold and rainy intrasquad game. "We have the makings of a fine team, but we'll have to wait until we can get outdoors a little before the kids can reach their potential." Two games are scheduled Friday. Both will be seven-inning seven-inning contests. The Antelopes Ante-lopes and T-Birds will clash in a single nine-inning game Saturday. Grand Canyon took two of three games from tough University Uni-versity of Nevada at Las Vegas Veg-as (Nevada Southern) in its opening contests. Last year, the Antelopes were ranked in the top five NCAA college division di-vision teams all season. CSU will open the season with an all-new infield. Four of the eight starters -- excluding exclud-ing pitchers -- will be vets, four will be newcomers. Veterans Veter-ans scheduled to start include catcher Reid Kimoto, first baseman Bobby Jewekes, cen-terfielder cen-terfielder Charlie Norton, and rightfielder Dave Jenson. Norton and Jenson were in-fielders in-fielders last seoson. Kimoto was the regular catcher a year ago, while Jewkes, hampered ham-pered by injuries, was a sometimes starter at third base. Newcomers for the Thunder-birds Thunder-birds include Tim Braithwaite, second; Jon Hoover, third; Don Larson, short, and Bill Briscoe, Bris-coe, leftfeild. Veteran righthander Larry Eyre is scheduled to start Friday's Fri-day's opener at Phoenix. Don Kirk, a righthanded transfer from Dixie Junior College, will go in the second game. Jack Mitchell, a transfer righty from University of Montana, will pitch Saturday's game. Newcomers Ron Holmes and Chuck Eaholtz are scheduled for relief. |
