Show iROLLO-glyphics KLIEN ROLLO so busy, I didn't get around to writing my column. That prompted some response, I'm happy to say. but some of the I really pulled a boo-boo last week. Really two boo-boos. boo-boos. The first was that I got that it was approximately t year late. The funds it referred to were those used in the construction con-struction of a new 16-bed extended ex-tended care unu at file center, which has already been occupied occu-pied since the first of the year. That information, incidentally incident-ally came directly from a long distance telephone call placed Wednesday from Washington just prior to our deadline. So I feel that I need to bring you up-to-date on the matter. What really happened Ls the Four Corners Regional Commission Com-mission issuea approval of a grant in the amount of $25,-650 $25,-650 to Valley View Medical Center. Now these funds are to be used for equiping a portion of this new lC-bed unit, but it will also be used for other purposes. According to Wm. Whipple, administrator, a goodly portion of the funds will be used for needed X-ray equipment and a portion will also be used for the installation installa-tion of a new discharge area for patients. When the new unit was being be-ing constructed the initial bids were out of range for the Valley View Medical Center's available funds so those in charge, according to Whipple, t began to cut and many of the Items that were cut included equipment items such as circular cir-cular curtains, wheel chairs, other things, that were drawn from the other operating unit to make it feasible to get the unit into operation. With this new grant from the Four Corners Region and additional grants from Hills Burton funds these items and other equipment as mentioned will now be feasible. The combined com-bined funds brings the total additional money to approximately approxi-mately $10,000. Why the story about the new addition and the HEW original grant released from one of our congressional representatives re-presentatives last week? Our political representatives are constantly on the lookout for funds and grants to various vari-ous areas of the state in order that they can announce those grants and in essence attempt to take some of the credit for them. This is a common practice prac-tice and is certainly not confined con-fined to any one of the two political parties in our government. govern-ment. Any governmental agency that provides a grant within the state of Utah, make it a practice, I'm sure at the request re-quest of all legislatures, to inform their offices of suchrj provisions of money. When this ls done the legislator legis-lator through their uubl.c relations re-lations departments release news or tni'se grants to the various media. We were not the only ones trapped in this particular release re-lease which was, except foi the Four Corners grant, somewhat some-what outdated. One of thf: state papers carried the story, it was also broadcast, over radio. ra-dio. Four Corners Commission, in fact, in announcing the funds reiterated the previous grants that had been given to Valley View Medical Center and the facts forwarded by our legislators was taken from this basic information. What really hurts is the fact that someone is trying to take credit for something they had nothing to do with and those, particularly at Valley View Medical Center who worked so hard to bring about these funds, are not given any credit whatsoever. So my apologies for not checking out a story. I could have saved a lot of embarras-ment embarras-ment for all if I'd have follow, od a general policy of checking check-ing my facts before I published pub-lished them. response was not exactly the kind I like. You see, I have an aunt and uncle In Salt Lake City who are very dear to me, and last summer when I had a few problems, they were most gracious to my family and I. iVell they take the paper, of course, and last week when Jiey didn't see the column they decided right then and there that I must be having problems again. That brought about a phone call, which prompted additional phone calls, before that matter was finally cleared up. So this weeK we nave the column. That's the first boo-boo. boo-boo. The second was my publishing publish-ing of a story from one of our congressional representatives about an allocation of funds for the Valley View Medical Center. The mistake was not checking jt out first. It seems that tne information informa-tion was basically correct but |
