Show Foreign students address BPW club members Members and guests of the Cedar City Business and Professional Pro-fessional Women's Club assembled as-sembled at Sullivan's Cafe for the regular dinner meeting. President Mary Anker presided presid-ed and welcomed everyone. The tables were beautiful with topiary trees of white nylon net and red roses, complimented compliment-ed by red tapers; Mrs. Anker again, announced the Winter Board meeting to be held in Salt Lake City on February 1st. The Cedar City Club will be well represented. Mrs. Ada Jones, Chairman, and her committee Personal Person-al Development, had charge of the program. She introduced Miss Georgia Beth Smith, Dean of Women at Southern Utah State College, who was moderator moder-ator for a panel of three foreign for-eign students now attending SUSC; Miss Smith presented Mrs. Ingrid Moffett from Denmark,. Den-mark,. Jack Sievenright from Scotland, and Miss Masakel Sakomoto fro Osaka, Japan. One of the topics for discussion discus-sion was the role of women in their cultures, and also the attitude at-titude toward Education and Employment of women. . The club. ladies learned that they differed- widely in the three cultures. In Denmark the emphasis em-phasis is-on education for women wo-men but they are looked down upon if they work after marriage. mar-riage. In Scotland the women work very hard. They finish school, at 15 years of age and go to-work. They-must supply, sup-ply, the money for dates because be-cause the men must serve as apprentices before they can earn good wages or be considered con-sidered proficient in their trades. In Japan the women receive good educations but do not work away from home. Their goal is to marry and take care of home and children. child-ren. Mrs. - Moffett displayed examples of handicraft from Denmark -- beautiful table linen and hand knit sweaters." Miss Wadsworth, also a sttf dent at SUSC, entertained by singing "Oh, Danny Boy", "Every Night When the Sun Goes In", and "Shenendoah". She accompanied herself on her guitar. |
