NORMAN CHILDS The Silver Star, the nations third highest decoration for gallantry in action, was recently re-cently awarded to Captain Norman Childs during ceremonies cere-monies in Tay Ninh, Vietnam. The citation accompanying the award stated: "Captain Childs distinguished himself Dy excepuuiia.iiy vaiuruus action ac-tion on 17 September 1969, while serving as commander of Company D, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile) 7th Cavalry, in the Republic of Vietnam. When the point platoon initiated initi-ated contact with enemy regulars regu-lars in well-entrenched bunkers bunk-ers and sniper positions, Captain Cap-tain Childs agressively led the company command post forward for-ward to the area of initial contact. Although under constant con-stant fire, he effectively coordinated coor-dinated the ground elements and friendly support to suppress sup-press the enemy. When the platoon leader and platoon sergeant were both seriously wounded and all communications communica-tions lost, with complete disregard dis-regard for his own safety, Captain Childs ran up and down the line giving instructions instruc-tions to the men and encouraging encour-aging the wounded. He exposed ex-posed himself time and time again to coordinate the evacuation evac-uation of the wounded and the resupply and distribution of ammunition. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the mili-.ary mili-.ary service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. Thp ranppr nfficnr is a native I of Lehi. He attended Southern Utah State College and the University of Utah where he was active in athletics and dramatics. He was commissioned commis-sioned in the United Stales Army in June of 1966 and is presently serving his third tour of duty in Vietnam. He will return to the United States in July to attend the Infantry Officers Career Course at Fort Benning, Ga. Captain Childs' wife, the former Gaylynn Sherratt, and young sons are residing in Cedar City. i |
