Show Summer School Will Feature Choral Workshop A special feaiure of College of Southern Utah Summer School will be a Choral Methods and Ma-tcr.als Ma-tcr.als Workshop beginning June 11. Instructors will be Dr. Blaine ( Johnson of the CSU music de- partment and Dr. Newell Weight, chairman of vocal music at University Uni-versity of Utah. The class will be held daily through June 23. i The instructors are both well known in the music field. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Weight attended Brigham Young University together to-gether where they received Bachelor Bach-elor of Arts degrees. Dr. Johnson received a Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Music Education degree from Columbia University in New York City. He also attended at-tended Union Theological Seminary. Semin-ary. He taught at Dixie College before joining the CSU faculty in 1951. Dr. Weight received a Master of Arts degree from BYU and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Southern California. He Is president of the Utah Music Mus-ic Education Conference. He was director of the BYU a'Capella Choir from 1950 to 19C1. Dr. McRay Howard, CSU Sum- mer School coordinator, said the workshop is designed to offer the teacher or the prospective teacher teach-er practical work in tone improvement, im-provement, effective diction and interpretation. A special laboratory labora-tory chorus of high school and college students will be used for training purposes. The choral group will represent high schools in Escalante, Kanab, Orderville, Panguitch, St. George, Beaver, Cedar City and Pioche, Nevada. Workshop students will receive training in vocal and choral techniques. A special choral program will be presented for the public at the conclusion of the workshop on Friday, June 25 at 8:15 p. m. in the CSU auditorium. |
