Show Thunderbirds and Rebels Clash In Last Official Meeting Here Saturday Only one basketball game is on the docket tor Cedar City this week-end and for all practical purposes it is one of the most looked forward to games of the season, regardless of the comparable com-parable standings of the two teams involved. It is the clash between the College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds Thun-derbirds and the Dixie Rebels. Tipoff time will be 8 p. m. Saturday Sat-urday evening at the CSU Memorial Me-morial fieldhouse. The highridlng Rebels, number one team in the Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference with four successive victories, and riding a winning streak of 11 games, will be attempting to make it a clean sweep over the Thunderbirds In what is supposedly suppo-sedly their last oificial meeting in the junior college competition. It is the halfway mark in the conference season for bth teams, and for Coach Boyd Adams and his Thunderbirds, a victory against the Rebels is not only a must to get into the running in the ICAC, but the equally important im-portant Ax, symbol of athletic supremacy, will also be in the ofifiini. The Thunderbirds, although losing to Snow last week end then picking up their first conference con-ference victory over Carbon Saturday, Sat-urday, showed signs of coming to life, could make it rough for the Rebels Saturday. One of the factors in the contest con-test will be the improved statis of Mel Wadsworth on the forward for-ward line. Wadsworth was the leading scorer for the T-Birds in games Friday and Saturday hitting hit-ting for 16 points against Snow and 21 against Carbon. The previous pre-vious week against the Rebels In St. George, he connected for only five points. Coach Adams will also be hoping ho-ping to keep both forward Ray Greenberg and center LaMar Pugh in the game. They both fouled out at St, George. In that contest the stiff man-to-man defense of the Rebels proved to be too much for CSU as Dixie moved to an easy 68 to 51 victory. The win gave the Rebels possession of the ax. Corry Jones, hitting for 19 points, 14 In the first half of play and Rusty Davidson on the boards, were the difference In the contest along with the tough defense. The Thunderbirds hope to have a few new wrinkles worked out for the game in hopes of changing chang-ing the tide and breaking the winning streak of the Rebels. Starting lineups are expected to find Davidson at center with Jones and Gordon Bascom at forwards for-wards and Delano Lyons and Dean Perkins at guards for the Rebels. For Coach Adams it will be LaMar La-Mar Pugh at center, Paul West and Ray Greenberg at guards . and probably Mel Wadsworth and Marian Roper at the forward spots. |
