Show Mrs. Gurlie Lundgren to Celebrate 90th Birthday with Family Gathering Tuesday MRS. GURLIE LUNDGREN One of Cedar City's oldest residents, resi-dents, Mrs. Gurlie Lundgren of 239 West College Avenue, will celebrate har 90th birthday, Tuesday, Jan. 29. For the occasion her four living liv-ing children and their families will be in Cedar City for a family dinner to mark the celebration. Mrs. Lundgren was born at Stockholm, Sweden in 1873 and came to the United States and southern Utah in 1898 when she married her husband, Charles Lundgren. Mr. Lundgren passed away November 27, 1947. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lundgren came to this country from Stockholm, Stock-holm, Sweden. Mr. Lundgren lived liv-ed in Utah 11 years before he returned re-turned to Sweden for a six month's visit Following that visit vis-it Mrs. Lundgren followed him to the United States and they were married in a Chicago Lutheran Church. Their flst home was in Cedar City, and aside from five years spent in Kanab,. the Lundgrens made their home in this community. com-munity. They were engaged in the sheep business and were life-long promoters of the community com-munity and area. Mrs. Lundgren, on the eve of her 90th birthday, recalls that she enrolled in one of the first classes at the Branch Normal School, now College of Southern Utah, when the institution was Just In its infancy and when "Old Main" was first erected. When the Lundgrens arrived in Cedar City to make their home, she recalls, there were only 400 peopje here. They took up residence resi-dence on 300 East street In a home still standing at the location loca-tion and in 126 built a home located lo-cated on the jorner of Harding Avenue and 200 West street The Lundgrens had six children, child-ren, four of whom are still living. Two of the children died while still youths. Two of the four children still make Cedar City their home. They include a son, Roy Lundgren, Lund-gren, and daughter, Mrs. F. B. (Sofie) Parkinson. Two other children are residing fn California. Califor-nia. They are Carl Lundgren, at Chula Vista, Calif., and Mrs. Wm. (Alice) Rose of Yuciapa, Calif. Mrs. Lundgren has always been an active member of the Presbyterian Church and has served as church and Sunday School treasurer in addition to serving as a trustee. In addition she has also been active in civic affairs. Annually she contributes t generously to the Junior Cham-ber Cham-ber of Commerce Christmas Lighting program, and she stated stat-ed that she likes the "Boy Scouts and other organizations dedicated dedicat-ed to youth." |
