Show Cedar City White House Conference Report Given; Submitted for National Program On Tuesday, April 5, Cedar Cliy'i White House Conference sumrry on children and youth was held. The speakers were Introduced by county chairman, Mrs. Reed Farnsworth, who gave a short, background of the White House Conference In the United States and listed the outstanding developments de-velopments and achievements of each conference sl'ce its beginning begin-ning in 1903 by President Theodore Theo-dore Roosevelt The problems of youth In Cedar City have bcc". The chairman and areas of study were: Family Life, Arvilla Day; Religion, Vernee Frame; Health, Dr. Gay-len Gay-len Brown: Government. Richard Gilles; Education, Merna Han-slnlc. Han-slnlc. Leisure Time Activity, Ther-ol Ther-ol McArthur; Vocations, Clifton Chatterley; Welfare, Ethel Smith. Each chairman gave a summary sum-mary report at Tuesday's meeting. meet-ing. These reports were overlapping overlap-ping in some areas which served a useful purpose in pointing up our problems ud rrphaiir. our needs as they were repeated In each area of itudy. It was pointed out by many of the chairmen that parents need to accept more responsibility responsibili-ty for our problems with youth, that they should be more concerned con-cerned with emotional conditions rather than the economic conditions condi-tions of our homes. They stated that parents should give more effective ef-fective guidance In education, religion re-ligion and military service and spend more time with their children. chil-dren. Each area stressed the power pow-er of adult example. Most chairman reported that the facilities in our area are good hut suggested better planning In order to provide more effective use of those we now have. It was pointed out that we need a year-round year-round swimming pool, a roller skating rink and better planned winter sports, more effective use of our school facilities. It v.as felt that more effective services could be provided by the state such as marriage counseling, coun-seling, a broader mental health program nd better insltutional help for children and youth with c.uotlonal problems. Mrs. Farnsworth felt that our local study compared favorably with any In the state and lnvlt-; ed all those who work with youth either as a parent or as a youth leader, to take advantage of the conference findings.
