Show Reappraisal of Timber Sales Requested On Dixie National Forest WASHINGTON December 19 Congressman Laurence J. Burton Bur-ton (R-Utah) has requested the National Forest Service to reappraise reap-praise its program of selling lumber in the Dixie National Forest. The Congressman commented, "Present Forest Service cost and price schedules do not adequately adequat-ely consider the quality of the lumber arid other pertinent factors fac-tors that Directly affect the local lumber industry. These policies pol-icies make it extremely difficult to purchase, process and market mark-et the lumber and make a profit pro-fit Other requirements for road construction in the logging area create hardships for the local lumber industry. These policies have caused the local mills to forego bidding on the starring timber and have resulted in substantial cutbacks in employment employ-ment in Panguitch." Mr. Burton stated that the National Forest Service recog- nizes the need to have the timber tim-ber removed, and appears to be sympathetic to the plight of the mills. "I hope they will make the necessary adjustments," the Congressman Con-gressman continued. "They have assured me that they will review re-view their programs and see if changes cannot be made that will alleviate the hardship on the mills. I'm confident that the problems can be resolved. |
