Show Teen-agers Tentatively Secure Cong. Stringiellow as Confab Speaker Ientative plans for tht enlistment enlist-ment of Congressman Douglas R. Stringfellovv as the principal speaker at a Region Six Teen- j Age Traffic Conference to be held in Cedar City Dec. 23, have been ! announced this week by Sharon I Clark, Cedar City, acting geneial chairman. Miss Clark and a Cedar City delegate, Janet Wasden, met with Congressman Stringfellow and Columbia Iron Mine Superintendent Superin-tendent G. D. MacDonald laie last week and "barring unforseen circumstances" the congressman agreed to appear on the agenda. Other organization work has been completed during the past week and a tentative schedule of events has been set by the general gen-eral chairman and will probably be followed after the approval of the couniy chairman of the six county affair. I The teen-agers tentatively 'outlined the day's activities for the conference on Dec. 23, to include in-clude a parade, morning session for adults and teen-agers, a luncheon, a session for adults with a separate teen-age resolution resolu-tion pant)l session in the afternoon, after-noon, and a banquet in the evening eve-ning with the presentation of .teen-age recommendations and resolutions to be presented. Some suggested topics of discussion dis-cussion for the teen-agers have been made from existing law problems and problems from similar conferences that have been held in the nation. Suggested topics are: (1) A state traffic ordinance which makes practical driver training in high schools a violation of traffic laws as they are now written. writ-ten. (2) The problem, on a local basis, of tractors being operated on state highways by children who are not capable of safely operating op-erating such vehicles. (3) The present state-wide problem: the "Grandaddy drivers' license," and (4) Supervised drag strips. Through the backing of civic organizations of the area, the Cedar Ce-dar City Coordinating Council Safety Committee and the Columbia Colum-bia Iron Mining Company, the teen-agers hope to make this conference a success. It has been pointed out that this is the first such meeting in the state of Utah and if successful will be the stepping stone for other areas of the state to approach the traffic safety problem from the teenagers teen-agers standpoint. |
