Show U. S. Scrap Order Aims to 'Flush' Two Million Tons An order which is expected to flush out about two million tons or iron and steel scrap from the nation's auto wrecking yards during dur-ing the next three months was is-sued is-sued Dec. 12 by the National Pro-duction Pro-duction authority, U. S. DepL of Commerce. About four million Junked cars and trucks will be affected by the order. . The new order, M-92, requires an inventory report to NPA by all wreckers, giving the number of motor vehicles, car units and the amount of loose scrap they had on hand as of Dec. 1, 1951. It also prohibits any wrecker from accepting any auto or car unit for the period March 1 to June 1, 1952, and on certain other days in the following year, unless un-less he has disposed of all cars manufactured before 1946. Finally, Final-ly, the order requires prompt and full compliance with any NPA directives di-rectives In allocating motor vehicles, ve-hicles, car units and loose scrap. It has ben estimated that there are some seven million automobiles automo-biles in wrecking yards of which four million were built prior to 1946, and, accordingly, subject to the n$w order. A car unit is defined de-fined as a motor vehicle which has been stripped of salvageable parts. , The order was issued to insure adequate supplies to consumers of iron and non-ferrous metal scrap In maintaining over-capacity production in the nation's mills and foundries. |
