Show Desert Mound Emerges as First Half Champ, League Battles Creating Much Interest Here Desert Mound, coming from behind be-hind in two extra inning games, 1 turned in a brilliant performance to take the championship for the first half of the Cedar City Softball Soft-ball league, last Friday evening. The performance . of George Sturzenegger, chucker for the Mounders, was even more outstanding, out-standing, in that he pitched for 18 consecutive innings. In those 18 innings he walked only two men and struck out nine. The second game of the playoffs play-offs was protested by the Parks team and it was decided by the board of directors of ihe Softball association that the game should be played over again from the top half of the eighth inning. The protest arose on a wrong decision de-cision on an overthrow ball, which would have scored a Parks man. The game was replayed Wednesday Wed-nesday evening from that point with the run scoring, however, the Desert Mound club managed to push two runs across in the bottom half of the eighth to end all disputes as to the first half champions. In the playoff involving three teams, Columbia Iron Mines, Utah Parks and the Desert nine, Desert Mound overcame a 4 to 2 advantace held bv Columbia in the seventh inning to throw the game into extra innings. Both teams were held runless in the eighth, the Mounders pushing the winning run across in the top half of the ninth inning on a hit by Gordon Sargent. Sargent, outstanding at the plate, knocked knock-ed in four of the five runs for Desert Mound, hitting three singles sin-gles in four trips to the plate. In the second and championship champion-ship game against Utah Parks, which had drawn a bye for the first round of play, the Desert Mound overcame a 6 to 3 disadvantage dis-advantage in the seventh inning again with a series of four hits, two for extra bases, and went on to win again in the ninth after two extra innings of play. The extra base hits for the Mounders Mound-ers in the seventh were by Dono Webster and Sid Thompson. Both Columbia and Utah Parks outhit the Mounders but were unable to maintain leads racked up in the early innings. Columbia Colum-bia collected 10 hits against 6 for Desert Mound and Utah Parks pounded out 11 hits compared to 8 for the mines team. One double play was made during the two game playoff by the Utah Parks. The play went from Madsen to Petty to Heath, shortstop to second to first, in the third inning of the final game. t Both Columbia and the Mounders Mound-ers made one error in the first game, but Utah Parks made six errors. Desert Mound allowed seven se-ven errors in the second encounter encoun-ter of the evening. The second half of the league got under way Mondey evening eve-ning and promises to be as thrilling as the first with strong teams, capable of pushovers, the rule instead of the exception. No one team, as proven in the first half has the advantage. A tight race with plenty of threels is ac-sured ac-sured for Cedar City Softball fans. |
