Show 1949 A Challenge to the American People As the old year is endinp; and we welcome the new, we look forward with misgivings with regards to some phases of life, but hopefully toward many others. There are many problems to be solved, and tragic days may lie ahead, but we have confidence in our leaders and in the American people to feel sure that somehow Things will work out in n way that will be for the best good to most people. Certainly the problems ahead offer a challenge to the people, a challenge to those charged with the responsibility responsibil-ity of national and international affairs, and a challenge to everyone as individuals. The fight for peace, and the battle against inflation are major problems on a national scale that will have their effects on all of us. " Coming closer to home we face some tremendous problems not the least of which is the matter of government govern-ment service and taxation. All parts of the state are ex panding so rapidly that the need for spending far exceeds the available revenue, posing a problem that must be met unitedly. Buildings for many purposes, particularly education, edu-cation, road and other developments, that each section feels is justified, will pose serious financing problems, but somehow they must be met. In Cedar City the people are faced with questions of paramount importance. New school buildings must be provided, greatly needed class rooms at the Branch Agricultural Agri-cultural college, destroyed by the recent fire, must be provided pro-vided again in order that educational opportunity may continue for the. young people of southern Utah. More and better roads must be provided to carry the ever increasing increas-ing stream of traffic into this play-ground of the West. Problems brought on by Cedar City's "growing pains", such as improvements of streets and sidewalks, extension of sewer systems, increased water supply, greater recreation facilities, and a host of other community com-munity "services" will require intelligent planning on the part of the city fathers. However, we look forward to the new year with confidence, con-fidence, because we know that Cedar City is progressive, the people of Cedar City as of the state and the nation are progressive, free and unafraid. |
