Show Chamber of Commerce Officials Talte Steps To Get U. S. O. Charter A major portion of the regular weekly meeting of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce held Monday evening was devoted to a discussion of the possibility of securing' a charter for the local U. S. O. unit and telegrams were directed to Maj or Earl Glade of Salt Lake City, head of the Utah U. S. O., and D. D. MacLean of Boulder, Colorado, divisional director of the organization, organiza-tion, in this connection. Applications for the charter was made sometime ago, but as yet no action has been taken on it Due , to the fact that the cadet program in Cedar City has been expanded, it is felt that a functioning U-S.O. t'nlt is needed here, and the Cliam-ber Cliam-ber of Commerce has undertaken to secure the charter without further fur-ther delay. Local officials feel certain cer-tain that definite word will be forthcoming forth-coming within the next two weeks as to whether or not a national U. S. f. charter and official recognition recog-nition will be given the local unit. In the absence of Morris Roberts, . who heads the airport and aviation committee of the Chamber, Don Draper, head or tho military affairs committee, was directed to Investigate Investi-gate the possibility of having the runway lights at the Cedar City airport kept burning all the time. This project, while It will Involve considerable expense, Is felt to be ery worthwhile, as many citizens have expressed the opinion that the B.24 bomber which crashed in the mountains near here a few weeks ago might have been saved lt the pilot had been able to locate the airport here and make a landing. land-ing. While such emergency landings are more or less rare, lt Is pointed out that the saving of one life, or the saving of a bomber which Is valued at $300,000, would more than pay for any expense Involved In keeping the lights at the airport burning. The proposed membership drlvg of the Chamber of Commerce was al- -so considered at the meeting, with the drive being scheduled to begin on Monday, February 21. Inasmuch as a full program has been outlined for the year, special efforts will be made to secure more members than ever before.
