Show BISHOP LEONARD. The birthplace of Pit. Kev. Abiel Leonard, Episcopal Epis-copal Bishop of Salt Lake, was Fayette, Mo. His death, though not unexpected for the past week, will be a shock to his numerous friends in Salt Lake, and the large diocese over which his jurisdiction juris-diction extended since 1838. His large diocese, which included Utah and Xevada, gave- him a varied experience, and, being a man of great observation, ob-servation, he made the best of his experience. During the fifteen years he labored in Utah all who knew him considered hiin an efficient worker and a highly revered friend. His work, since his appointment ap-pointment to his last charge,, consisted mainly in missionary labors, We cannot recall any of his public utterances which would distinguish him as a profound thinker, great scholar or fluent speaker, yet his elevation to the high dignity which his church bestowed upon him is an assurauce that he was a learned divine, and that his noble character won for him the honors which his church conferred upon him. Ho was kind and charitable to all. In one of his distant missions, which he visited last summer, one of lus flock told the writer that lie gently reprimanded his people for not being more charitable to an old, feeble and destituto lady that was dying. Xone could fail to appreciate the sympathy sym-pathy expressed in his words, and the charity which prompted them. His pleasing manners' and affablo disposition won for him many friends outside of his own church, lie will be missed by these; his spiritual flock ' will miss i him still more; but only in the family circle, where he proved himself a devoted head, and an affectionate father and husband, hus-band, is the loss irreparable. The Intermountain Catholic unites with all friends in extending its sympathy to the bereaved family. - : . |
