Leary and Miss Loreive Leary have returned from the east, bringing with them Miss Leila Potter of St. Joseph for a short visit. 4 Mrs. Arthur S. Bird entertained Wednesday Wed-nesday at luncheon at the' Country club. -- Clarence-MoPadden returned on Sunday Sun-day evening from Boston, where he has been studying law at the University of Boston. Mr. MeFadden received his degree of LL. B. at the June commencement. com-mencement. He was formerly a student stu-dent at the Salt Lake High school, w here for a number of seasons he was manager of the football team. 4 Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Glosz have made a camp at Green's farm, southeast of the city, and will stay there during the summer. 4 Mrs. A. B. Greeson and daughter, Hilda, have arrived in the city, and the family are now at S3 Q street. 4 Fire Chief Bywater was pleasantly surprised Tuesday night on the occasion occa-sion of his forty-fifth birthday by members of his department, who presented pre-sented him with a beautiful gold medal, me-dal, set with a fine diamond and suitably suit-ably inscribed. Following the presentation, which was made by Secretary Cowburn. refreshments re-freshments were served to all those present .the guests including the. wives and children of the members of the department, de-partment, the mayor and the city coun cil. The committee in charge cleared the gymnasium of the department, decorated deco-rated it with flags and flowers and used the room for dancing and merrymaking merry-making until after midnight. The medal given to the chief Is in the form of a Maltese cross, set with a diamond in the center, surrounded by j the chiefs insignia of five bugles and surmounted by the fireman's helmet. . Information was received in- Salt Lake this week to the effect that W. S. McCornick. accompanied by his wife and daughter, landed in New York Sunday, after an extensive trip to France. Germany and England. Mr. , McCornick remained in New York until un-til Thursday for the purpose of meeting meet-ing T. R. Cutler, with whom he is a member of the board of directors of-the of-the Utah and Idaho sugar companies. Mr. McCornick will come direct to 1 ( Salt Lake, leaving Ne.w York about Thursday. His wife and daughter will remain in the east for the summer enjoying life at the seashore. 4 Mary A. Capell of Wells, Nev.. has filed suit in the Federal court against the Southern Pacific, in which -she asks damages in the sum of $25,903.35 and costs of suit for personal injuries. On j July 3. 1904, Mrs. Capell was a passen-j passen-j ger on one of the Southern Pacific trains near Wadsworth. The train collided with a switch engine throw-nig throw-nig Mrs. Capell from her seat, breaking break-ing three of her ribs, injuring her head, lungs and heart. In addition to $25,000 damages for permanent injuries re- I ceived. Mrs. Capell asks that she be reimbursed in the sum of $903.25, expended ex-pended for services of physicians,' surgeons sur-geons and nurses. W. H. Curt in of St. Joseph has come here to join Mra Curtin for a visit at the Smedley home. 4 C. S. Williams of the Milwaukee road will be back in a few days from a northern trip. 4 Walker Salisbury goes to San Francisco Fran-cisco shortly to join the Kirkpatrick family at their summer cottake at Lake Tahoe. Frank S. Murphy of Perry, Ore., manager of the Grande Ronde Lumber company of that place, and formerly of Salt Lake, is back here to stay. Mr. Murphy will open offices for his company. com-pany. He has purchased a home at 857 E street from R. G. Wilson. a 3 1-3x10 seven-room house for $7,000. The deal was made through W. J. Halloran. 4 ' Mrs. P. Connelley and Margaret have returned from Bingham Junction. 4 Miss Mabel Nissler, one of Butte's most charming young girls, is visiting Miss Margery Mulvev. 4 ' Miss Louise McHugh, who has a very pretty voice, was heard on Wednesday Wednes-day at the reception given in honor of Madame Fox. The friends of the young girl were delighted with the improvement she showed.. Mrs. Krolow and. Miss Maud Krolow former residents of this city and who have lived in San Francisco for the past twelve years, have returned to Salt Lake and will make it their future home. -4- s S. J. O'Laughlin. the rustling representative repre-sentative of the St. Louis hay exchange, ex-change, accompanied by Mr. Mitchell of St. Louis, were delegates to' the Los Angeles national convention and on their return trip took in the beautiful scenery of the Salt Lake vallev. Brother Bro-ther Knights in Salt Lake made their visit a pleasant one. They left for home on Friday. 4 August Geier of Denver, returning from the national convention of the K. of C. spent two days in the'eity last week.
