Show t mrs. Stanford's munificent I t Gift to the Church I t : The Sacramento Bee of the 19th inst. announces the gift of Mrs. Le- land Stanford of the beautiful Stanford mansion at Eighth and N streets to Right Rev. Bishop Grace of the Catholic diocese of Sacramento and his successors forever, together with an endowment fund of $75,000. This money has been invested in interest bearing bonds and the n onthly ineome will be applied to the maintenance of the "Lathrop-Stanford Children's Day Home," by which the place will be known. The home will 4- probably be conducted by the Sisters of Mercy. . For twenty years this mansion, one of the handsomest in the city, has been unoccupied, save for trie solitary caretaker who has served in that capacity since Senator Stanford and his wife removed to the great house "" on California street, San Francisco. For the old home place which she gave away today Mrs. Stanford has always cherished the deepest affec- l tion. It was there that her son, Leland Stanford, jr., was tern, and to I -- 1 4 ' 4- 4 "T , ' ' 4- this day the playthings in ins room remain as when they were left by ' 4- the !ad in whom the senator and his wife had centered their best hopes. 4 The old dining room appears as it did during the days when General 4- Sherman, General Grant. President Haye3 and other distinguished men 4- were entertained there. 4- ' 4- The same massive furniture remains: the same pictures look down 4- 4 from the silent walls; the time sorrow seems to brocd over everything. 4- as it has from the day when the senator and his wife, filled with mem- 4 ories of departed tenants, turned away from the abode and visited it no 4- more except in imagination. But the memories were all tender ones, and X ' 4- Mrs. Stanford would have preferred that the old mansion, should have 4- crumbled to decay than that its history should be profaned. . 4- ilrs. Stanford has planned srre improvements, which Bishop Grace 4- 4- will carry out nrior to the opening cf the institution. The home and 4- 4- grounds, however, are in perfect condition, and the premises are meet 4- attractive. Mrs. Stanford a few vears ago gave evidence of her inter- 4- est in the Catholic church here by presenting to the Bishop a mamifi- 4- cent picture of the Madonna, conied by permission of the Emperor of 4- Austria from the original one of the old' masters, In the Royal Galierv. 4- The painting today occupies the most prominent wall space in the Ckthe- X 4- dral.
