Show THE CREDIT AND DEBIT SIDE. Now, having enjoyed the intimate friendship of England for about two years, where are we at? We have acquired ac-quired the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and part of Samoa, and we have freed Cuba, while Great Britain said to Europe: Eu-rope: "Stand back! Hands off!" This is the credit side.. On the debit side we are as isolated from the resf. of the world as England is. This, the chief of Republics, has not a friend amcng the other Republics We are cold toward France, our first ally, who gave us our independence and taught us liberty. We have no sympathy with j the Boers, who are fighting England now as we fought her in 1776. Russia, i the only nation that stood by us during the Civil war and sent a fiet't here to prevent England from intervening, is j now indifferent, if net inimical. With Germany, closely bound to us by ties I of blood, we have been on the point of hostilities. Freedom for Ireland, j once dear to every American heart, is I now dismissed as an idle dream. We j are becoming imperialized according to ; English methods. We are growing de-j de-j generate after the English fashions in politics, literature and plays. Strike the balance sheet and decide whether a close friendship with our ancient and ! only enemy pays. It certainly does not pay in American politics, for it will cost the Republican party the next Presldnncy if the Democrats take advantage ad-vantage of their opportunities and nominate a decent ticket. |
