Show OUR PEOPLE AND OUR BOOKS. There are hundreds of thousands of Catholic families that never buy one Catholic book, except prayer books and school books, from year's end to year's end. Whose fault is this ? It is mainly the fault of the publishers. They have almost killed off the retail booksellers by selling direct, with full trade discount, to the clergy and the religious orders; they cater nearly exclusively to that trade; they do not advertise, and consequently the Catholic public do not know even the names of standard Catholic works, much less the prices set on them or the places where such volumes can be bought. The business of getting out Catholic books might well be undertaken by the Church itself, on the plan of th Methodist Book Concern or the old Catholic Publication Society of Father Hecker's time.
