Show CATHOLIC COUNTRIES AND PAUPERISM. The Rev. Dr. O'Brien in his recently published volume quotes some statistics which Protestant controversialists con-troversialists Avould do well to note. According to the "Statesmen's Year Book" there is: "In Holland, 1 pauper to every 20 inhabitants. In Germany, 1 pauper to every 31 inhabitants. In Xorway, 1 pauper to every -2 inhabitants. In Great Britain and Ireland, 1 pauper to every 31 inhabitants." These are Protestant countries. Compare these figures with those of Catholic countries: "In Belgium, Bel-gium, 1 pauper to every 1,321 inhabitants. In Austria, Aus-tria, 1 pauper to every 145 inhabitants." Lest it should be argued that Ireland increases the pauper statistics of the Three Kingdoms, it is as well to add that the pauperism in Ireland is less than in either England or Scotland. In Ireland the figure is 1 to 43, in England. 1 to 33; in Scotland, 1 to 32. i : : |
