Show CHORES FOE. BOARD. Ex-Congressman Ridg-ely Cooking in Lawton, Ok (Detroit Tribune.) Topeka, Kan. On March 4 last Edward Ed-ward 11. Ilidgely retired as congressman congress-man from the Third Kansas district, and he is today cooking and doing chores for his board and a place to sleep in Lawton, Okla. When Ridgely was elected to congress con-gress in 1S9J he owned a half interest ii a mercantile business in Pittsburg, Crawford county, Kansas, but sold his share to his brother. When be left the office he had only a. little money and no profession to fall back on. He was too proud to farm, and the mercantile mer-cantile business did not offer its former inducements. He lived in Pittsburg for a time without doing anything, and finally drifted to the Kiowa country in search of a place and opportunity to begin life again. He was! found in Lawton last week by Colonel Fred Donelson. who had been one of the Ridgely political supporters sup-porters in former years. Colonel Donelson Don-elson says that when he saw Ridgely the former congressman had just returned re-turned from an errand for the grocery man who gives him his board. He was carrying a large piece of ice in a sack on his back. The ex-congressman said that he had been offered a chance to sleep in the grooeryman's wagon at night and a job of cooking and running errands for his board. He says the accommodations accommo-dations are not as good as he has had, but he cannot complain, and is looking for a chance to make a fortune. |
