Bert Poulson, the 19-year-old son of -Mr. and Mrs. Albert Poulson, was killed in an auto collision between Gunnison and Centerfield. Young Poulson Poul-son was struck in the right chest by the tong-uc of a wagon and his chest was caved in. Most of his ribs were broken and the collar bone shattered. When he was picked up from the ground, where he had been thrown by the impact of the collision it was found that his neck had been broken. The man was rushed to the home of Joseph Bardsley, Jr., and Dr. Hagan summoned but medical aid was of no avail and Pnnlson rlierl fiffeon niinnle-i after the accident. According to reports the accident happened about 8:30 just north of the home of Joe Bardsley. Howard Roberts, Rob-erts, John Baxter and Erwin Roberts were coming north, each driving wagons heavily loaded with wheat. The wagons were holding the proper side of the road and were going slowly. slow-ly. Poulson, so it is said, was going south and his car was without light.. The driver of the car passed the first wagon in safety and then turned square into the team driven by John Baxter. Baxter declares that Poulson Poul-son was driving at a pretty fusi, speed, as the Ford touring car v. .la plunged under the horses and for a time the horses were elamoring on top of the hood of the car, just before they fell to the ground. The tongue of the wagon was forced through the windshield and passed through the steering wheel where it was locked firmly. The impact, it is thought, crushed the breast of the unfortunate man before he was thrown from the ear. Poulson was alone in the car at the time of the accident. ac-cident. Bert Poulson, though a resident of the valley but a short time, was well known and during his short residence here he made hosts of warm friends. He was unmarried and was energetic and decidely ambitious and took pride in the work at the farm with hi3 -father and brothers and his tragic dea'tji will' not only be mourned by his parents but by all who knew him. The fatal accident last evening is the first real tragedy to happen on the new highway which is now building. Many, however, have been already i narrowly averted. There is no blame attached to Mr. Baxter, the driver of the wagon which the Poulson car crashed into, as the car was without (lights and was on the wrong side of : the road. Many complaints have been ! made of the utter disregard of horse propelled vehicles as to the rights-of-i way on the state highway. Numerous i drivers will take the wrong side of the road and notwithstanding warn, i ings given are insolent and violate the , law by being on the wrong side. Following the accident last evening a survey was taken and at least four,, automobiles were counted passing through the Main streets of the city without lights. This is in direct violation vio-lation of the state law if the minions of the laws will devote a little time in rounding up some of the flagrant violators vio-lators of the state vehicle law, there wiil be less accidents. |
