The New York Evening Post describes de-scribes the memorial : "In design the monument is a shaft of the Roman dor-ic dor-ic order, surmounted by an eagle, and supported on a pedestal occupying the center of a platform, which measures twenty-six feet square. The platform has a low parapet and is approached at the center of the four sides by steps. Including the eagle, it is built of fine cut white Concord granite. Four btmze tablets, each measuring 6 feet 5V3 inches by 4 feet 10 inches, appear on the die. The coat-of-arms of the state of New York is shown over the dedicatory inscription. "Another of tlte tablets gives New York's command at Antietam. The third plate contains a brief resume of New York's part in the battle, with the names of its corps, division and brigade commanders in the battle. The names of New York's officers killed or mortally wounded in the battle bat-tle are inscribed on the fourth tablet." |
