Show ' Panguitch Boy Named ! To Legion Baseball Team In Cedar City j By John Yardley Clint Barney, a 1988 graduate of ; Panguitch High, became only the second local boy in recent years to " try-out and make an American Legion Le-gion baseball team last week, as he made the Cedar City entry in the state alignment. Rodney Frandsen of Panguitch played Legion ball a few years ago down in Sevier ; Valley. Panguitch did have their own American Legion team 30 years ago. Barney was an all-star catcher with Panguitch and one of the team's top sluggers the last two years, but in the shortened fall schedule he didn't get enough baseball. base-ball. He wanted to try some more and was invited to try-out at Cedar City. He made the team and last week played in four games getting at least one hit in each game. Barney Bar-ney played left field where he made a couple of nice catches and threw out a runner at third, and he also caught two games. It is a trying situation to play for a team 70 miles away. Barney drives the mileage to Cedar three days a week to practice, then plays games two days per week. It takes a lot of dedication, especially considering consid-ering he has a series of sprinkler lines to change and a little league team to coach on the side! Barney excelled in basketball and track as well as baseball as a student stu-dent at PHS. Good luck, Clint, and congratulations for going the extra mile. In other sports activity, don't forget Karl Malone is coming to Panguitch this next week to put on another clinic like he did last year. The experience last summer was an enjoyable one as this writer welcomed wel-comed Malone and witnessed his kindness and interaction with both youth and adult. All adults are also welcome to come and participate. Malone has become a bonafide all-star all-star in the NBA this season, proving prov-ing he can play with the best of the best. The Jazz gave the Lakers as good a run for their money as any- I ' v, ' - ! f : 3 Clint Barney one has in '88, and Karl Malone, the Mailman, indeed delivered. Make sure you get over to the Panguitch Pan-guitch gym and meet Karl. In the NBA, the Lakers defeated the Pistons in their first game back in Detroit to take a two games to one lead in the finals. Detroit can ill-afford to lose another game at home against the defending world champions. In defeating the Celtics, Detroit kept Boston from their fifth straight title round. In the series with the Pistons, Larry Bird was only 40 of 111, as the Celtics shooting was horrid. Danny Ainge was just 1 of 17 in the last two games. The Celtics must get some help from the bench, if they are going to win another title during the Bird era. |
