Show Garfield GOP State Delegates Honored Nine delegates from Garfield County attended Friday and Saturday's Satur-day's Republican Convention in Salt Lake City where they were provided front-row seats to all the excitement. Because Garfield County had the highest percentage of voters voting Republican of any county in the str ;e, the seats were awarded as a prize at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. Of local interest, and in a strong show of support, Jim Eardley received re-ceived 58 delegate votes to Dixie Leaviu's 50 for the Senate District 29 seat. They will oppose each other in the September 13 primary when the seat will be decided, since no Democrat has filed. Eardley's nomination was seconded sec-onded by Garfield County's Elaine Baldwin who noted that Eardley had already been working for Garfield County and "he hasn't even been elected yet." She said Eardley's businss "Eardley Travel" has been bringing tourists into the county, and that he had been in the county checking out issues important to local people before filing for the District 29 senate seat. Garfield County Republican delegate Jim Clarke seconded Leaviu's Leav-iu's nomination, citing his past performance and qualifications to serve. In the contest for the District 73 House seat, incumbent Jim Yardley received 34 votes to Ted Gublcr's 7, guaranteeing Yardley a place on November's ballot. The nine-member group listened to speakers Maureen Reagan, co-chairman co-chairman of the Republican National Na-tional Committee; Senator Robert Dole, and Secretary of the Interior Donald Hodel. They also heard from Orrin Hatch and Jim Hansen and from Sen. Jake Gam who nominated nomi-nated Gov. Norman Bangerter for re-election. Making the trip to the state convention were Elaine Baldwin, Jim Clarke, Jim Yardley, Brian Foy, Tom Hatch, John Houston, Louise Lislon, Dell LeFevre and Lincoln Lyman. |
